The Secret handshake | Ep 19

You're either in or out.

All organizations and societies are oligarchies.

Jeff Younger argues that technical competence gets you in the door, but political savvy determines how far you rise, because every organization runs on informal rules and unsanctioned channels that are rarely discussed.

He defines politics as going outside sanctioned processes to get things done and explains that it’s unavoidable in work, business, and civic life.

He describes political climates—minimally, moderately, highly, and pathologically politicized—and notes these can coexist within one organization and shift over time. He outlines individual political styles (purist, team player, street fighter, maneuverer) and stresses that success depends on matching style to environment or leaving.

He frames organizational power as a “favor bank,” warns against insufficient gratitude, expecting unearned favors, and overgiving, and emphasizes reading subtext, spotting common political moves, and building relationship capital as the best defense.
